Islamkot is a town in Tharparkar district, out in the Thar desert in the far south-east of Sindh, roughly 380 kilometres from Karachi by road. It has grown a great deal busier over the past decade because of the coal development in the surrounding blocks, which brings engineers, contractors and administrative staff in and out on a steady cycle. Getting there

There is no short version of this journey. Coming from Karachi it is a full day's driving, and most passengers break the trip rather than attempt a return within the same twenty-four hours. Mithi, the district headquarters, is the last sizeable town on the way and a sensible point to stop. Travelling on toward Nagarparkar in the south-east adds a further stretch across desert country. Because of these distances, bookings here are almost always multi-day, with the out-of-city rate charged for each day the vehicle stays with you.

Surfaced road does not extend everywhere out here, and sand, gradients and rough approaches to sites are normal conditions. Ground clearance and a robust drivetrain matter more than cabin luxury.

• Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin — 14 seats — Rs 15,000 per day out of city, Rs 12,000 in city, suited to the surfaced sections of a group journey.

Project and site travel

Where staff rotate in and out on a schedule, it is simpler to book a vehicle for a block of days than to arrange each leg separately. Tell us the rotation dates, how many people travel at a time and how much kit comes with them, and we will propose a vehicle mix. If the itinerary includes site access where a pickup is more use than an SUV, say so; the Revo is in the fleet for exactly that.

Planning a desert trip

Visitors come for the landscape, the villages and the drive itself, and Thar rewards an unhurried schedule. Build the day around early starts and allow far more time between points than the distance on a map suggests, because average speeds off the main road are low. Water, fuel planning and a charged phone count for more here than anywhere else we operate. Share your intended stops with the office before departure so the driver can plan fuel and daylight around them.

Heat, dust and the state of the car

Thar is punishing on vehicles. Fine dust gets into everything, summer temperatures make air conditioning a necessity rather than a comfort, and a breakdown a long way from a workshop is a serious inconvenience for everybody. That is why vehicles going out on these routes are checked before departure and why we prefer to send the sturdier end of the fleet rather than whatever happens to be free. If your dates fall in the hottest months, mention it, because that influences which vehicle we put on the job and how the driving day is split.

One-way drops and returns

Not everyone needs the car for the whole stay. Some passengers want a drop and will travel back another way, or will be collected later by a colleague already in the area. Both can be arranged, but a one-way drop several hundred kilometres from our base is priced with the return leg in mind, since the vehicle and driver still have to come home. Ask about it when you enquire and you will get a straight figure rather than a surprise later.

How a long-distance booking is handled

Vehicles are dispatched from our Karachi office; there is no counter in Islamkot, and the car reaches you rather than you collecting it. When you book, confirm the start date, the number of days, the passenger count, whether the trip is a return or a one-way drop, and how fuel, tolls and the driver's meals and accommodation are being handled. Those last items matter far more on a week in Tharparkar than on an afternoon in the city. The driver's name and number are passed to you before he leaves.
